How to choose Portuguese wine for a dinner
Choosing wine for a dinner is easier than it looks. You don't need to know every grape or every region. You need a simple order of bottles, a rough idea of how much to buy, and a few names you can trust. Portugal makes it easier still, because its regions have clear personalities. This guide walks through one dinner, course by course, using wines we sell. Every detail about a wine comes from its own product page.
First, three quick decisions
How many people? Count the guests and the courses, then plan one bottle per course rather than a bottle per person. An unopened bottle keeps for another day, and a Port can last well beyond the dinner.
One wine or several? One good red for the whole table is perfectly fine. If you want to make the dinner feel special, open a sparkling wine when people arrive, a white with the first course, a red with the main and a Port with dessert.
What is the main dish? Choose the wine for the main course first. Everything else fits around it.
When guests arrive: something sparkling
A glass of sparkling wine is the easiest welcome. It is light, it goes with almost any starter, and it signals that the evening has started.
- Porta 6 Sparkling Brut has a fresh, fruity aroma with green apple, tropical fruit and a touch of lemon.
- For a bigger group, the Portuguese Sparkling Tasting Box holds twelve bottles: six Messiah Millesime Sparkling and six M&M Silver Edition Sparkling.

The first course: a white from the north
Portugal's north, around Vinho Verde, makes fresh whites with good acidity. They suit lighter starters, fish and salads.
- Soalheiro Alvarinho is made from 100% Alvarinho in Monção e Melgaço, the northernmost zone of Vinho Verde. The Atlantic climate, with hot days and cool nights, keeps its acidity fresh, and the granite soils give it a mineral character.

The main course: a red from the Douro or Lisbon
For red meat, roasts and richer dishes, a Douro red is a reliable choice. The Douro valley is best known for Port, but it also makes structured table wines from the same grapes.
- Crasto Tinto from Quinta do Crasto uses traditional Douro grapes: Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca and Touriga Franca. It is fresh and fruity, with ripe red fruit and light tannins, so it does not overpower food.
- Quinta do Portal Colheita Tinto is a modern Douro red with ripe fruit and smooth tannins, made for both relaxed and more formal dinners.
- Quinta do Vallado Douro Superior Tinto comes from organic vineyards and has the floral aromas of Touriga Nacional, with intense but silky tannins and a fresh finish. A good pick when you want the red to be a talking point.
If you want something closer to everyday, Porta 6 Reserva from Lisbon has a dark ruby colour, aromas of wild and black berries, spice and a touch of chocolate, with a fruity, structured taste. For a long table, the Porta 6 Tinto magnum holds 1.5 litres in one bottle.

Dessert and cheese: Port
Port is the natural end to a Portuguese dinner. Two styles cover most desserts.
- With chocolate, nuts or a cheese board: W. & J. Graham's Six Grapes Reserve Ruby Port is described as pairing very well with chocolate or nut-based desserts and with rich cheeses.
- With caramel, dried fruit or simply on its own: a tawny. Taylor's 10 Year Old Tawny Port is an age-indicated tawny from the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior.
- If the bottle will last more than one evening: Taylor's Late Bottled Vintage Port is ready to drink without decanting and keeps for several weeks after opening.

Buying for the dinner in one order
If you are cooking for six or more, a case often makes more sense than single bottles: you get variety, and delivery is charged per order, not per bottle. The Quinta dos Poços Winemakers 6 bottles case covers a full dinner from one estate, with four reds (including a Great Reserve and a Reserve) and two whites. For more ready-made cases, see the Wine Box collection.
A simple plan you can copy
For a dinner for six:
- 1 bottle of sparkling to welcome guests
- 1 bottle of Alvarinho for the starter
- 1 or 2 bottles of Douro red for the main course
- 1 bottle of Port for dessert, which keeps longer than table wine once opened
Order well ahead of the date: the checkout shows the delivery options for your address before you pay, and the whites and sparkling need time in the fridge. See our shipping policy.
